The riverside home where Agatha Christie spent her happiest years sits about twenty minutes from Paignton, down a steep wooded drive that feels properly removed from the Devon coast crowds. Greenway is less about dusty exhibition cases and more about stepping into the life of a real person - you'll see her furniture, her books, the way she actually lived rather than a sanitised museum version of it.

The house itself is the star. Walking through rooms where Christie plotted her murders, sat in her garden room looking out over the River Dart, or gathered with friends feels immediate and human. The gardens sweep down to the water's edge and alone justify the visit - especially if you time it for spring when everything's in bloom. There's a kitchen garden she loved, woodland paths, and enough space that you won't feel crammed in even during school holidays.

This appeals most to literature types and anyone interested in how writers actually worked, though families with older kids do well here too. Younger children get restless without activities to grab their attention. Allow at least two hours, longer if you're reading properly or want to sit by the river.

The nearby holiday parks - Whitehill Country Park and Hoburne Devon Bay are your closest options - make it an easy half-day trip from a week's base in the area.
