National Trust - Etherley Copse

You won't find Etherley Copse on many tourist maps, which is precisely why it's worth the short drive south from Dorking. It's a proper woodland plot managed by the National Trust - the sort of place that rewards a quiet wander rather than a quick photo stop. The trees here are ancient, the undergrowth dense, and there's a real sense of stepping into something untouched.

The walking is straightforward enough. Paths wind through the copse without dramatic elevation or technical terrain, making it manageable for families with young legs, though older kids might find an hour feels like enough. You're looking at woodland birds, seasonal wildflowers, and that particular silence you only get in old English woods. It's not a destination that'll fill an entire day - be honest about that - but as a morning or afternoon detour while staying at somewhere like Riverside Farm nearby, it slots in nicely.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so come prepared: proper shoes, a map on your phone if the Trust's signage is sparse, and realistic expectations about what a small copse offers. Late spring works best if you want to see anything flowering. In summer the canopy closes in; winter can be muddy. Free access as you'd expect from the National Trust, though parking might mean a short walk from wherever you leave the car.
