National Trust - Cliveden

The Thames Valley's most theatrical country house sits high on a chalk ridge above Maidenhead, commanding views that stretch for miles across the river bend. Cliveden is the sort of place that demands proper shoes and at least half a day - the 376 acres of grounds are genuinely impressive, with woodland walks, formal gardens, and terraces that feel almost continental in their ambition.

What you're actually walking around is a listed Italianate mansion built in 1851, though the grounds tell a longer story. The gardens cascade down the hillside in proper Victorian style - yew hedges, herbaceous borders, and a fountain garden that's particularly striking in high summer. There's a riverside path that takes you down to the Thames itself, which is worth the steep walk back up for the views alone.

Histoire buffs will find plenty to chew on. The house has housed everyone from the Astors to Lady Astor, and it's got all the scandal and intrigue you'd expect from a National Trust property of this calibre. For families, the grounds are brilliant - kids can burn off proper energy on the woodland trails, though the house itself might feel a bit slow for under-eights.

Allow three to four hours minimum. It's National Trust, so admission is ticketed and members go free. Visiting in spring or early autumn beats summer crowds significantly.
