National Trust - Cley Hill

The walk up Cley Hill proper rewards you. It's a cone-shaped lump of chalk rising sharply above the Wiltshire plain near Warminster, and from the top you get proper 360-degree views across the countryside - Longleat House sits off to one side, the Cotswolds fade into the distance the other way. The National Trust maintains the footpaths, which are well-marked and mostly cleared of the worst of the brambles, though after wet weather it can be a bit muddy and slippery underfoot.

It's not a long climb. Maybe twenty minutes on the main route depending on fitness, though the gradient is steeper than it looks from below. Families with younger kids might find it challenging, but anyone capable of a steady walk will manage fine. The summit itself is quite bare - just rough grass and a few scattered stones - but that openness is actually the point. On a clear day you can see for miles, and in early morning or late afternoon the light's absolutely lovely across the valleys.

Historians reckon there's Iron Age hill fort remains up there, though honestly the archaeological evidence is subtle enough that you won't get much from just wandering about. It's really a walkers' hill rather than a history textbook moment. If you're staying at Center Parcs Longleat Forest or any of the holiday parks clustered nearby, it makes a cracking half-day outing. Free to access, no faffing about with opening hours. Allow two hours total if you're not rushing and fancy a sit-down at the top.
