Little Cley Hill

The walk up Little Cley Hill takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the views across Wiltshire from the top are genuinely worth the effort. It's a proper mini-peak rather than a fell - nothing that'll tax serious walkers, but steep enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. The summit gives you sight lines over farmland that stretch for miles, and on clear days you can pick out distant hills rolling away towards the horizon.

This is a cracking spot for families with kids old enough to manage a modest climb without complaint. The path is clear, there's no scrambling required, and the whole thing takes under an hour from bottom to top. History types will appreciate that it's an ancient site - Bronze Age barrows dot the hillside, though they're subtle enough that you'll walk past them without knowing unless you're really looking.

It's free to access and open whenever you fancy - just park near Warminster and head out. Go on a weekday morning if possible; weekends get busier than you'd expect for something so understated. The exposed location means it can be windier and wetter than the valleys below, so check the weather before committing.

If you're staying at Center Parcs Longleat Forest or any of the holiday parks clustered nearby, Little Cley Hill makes an ideal morning walk before the main attractions fill up. It's close enough to Longleat that you could combine it with a park visit, but honestly, it works best as a standalone break from holiday camp routine - somewhere to breathe without the crowds.
