National Trust - Blackcap

Blackcap rises out of the South Downs just a few miles north of Hassocks, a proper viewpoint rather than a destination in itself. The National Trust owns this modest hilltop, and on a clear day the views roll right down to the Sussex coast. You get chalk grassland, open sky, and the sense that you've found something locals actually use rather than somewhere tourists flock to.

Walkers will get the most from it. It's not a strenuous hike - the terrain is gentle if you come up from the village side - but the reward is genuine: that sudden widening of the horizon when you crest the top. The chalk downland itself is worth the attention if you're into wildflowers and butterflies. In summer it's properly alive.

There's no visitor centre or facilities, which keeps it refreshingly straightforward. Free access, no timed entry nonsense. Budget an hour if you're combining it with a longer walk across the downs, or twenty minutes if you're just popping up for the view.

If you're staying at The Secret Campsite nearby, Blackcap makes a natural morning outing before breakfast. It's close enough to slip into a wider South Downs walking itinerary without dominating your day. The slope can feel a bit exposed in poor weather - come when conditions favour it rather than persisting through drizzle. Best visited spring through early autumn when the grassland rewards the effort.
