National Space Centre

The National Space Centre sits on the edge of Leicester like some sort of gleaming spacecraft itself - a proper futuristic building that catches you off guard when you round the corner. Inside, it's a full-on space obsession: actual satellites, rockets, spacesuits worn by real astronauts, the lot. You can walk through the Soyuz capsule, mess about with the interactive exhibits, and watch planetarium shows that make your neck ache but are genuinely brilliant.

It's excellent for kids aged 5 and up - teenagers with a genuine interest in space will happily spend three hours here, younger ones might get restless after 90 minutes. Adults without a particular space fascination can tour it in under two hours and call it done. The planetarium adds another 30-45 minutes if you're keen.

Admission isn't free, but it won't break the bank. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends get rammed with school groups. The building itself is well thought-out, with a decent cafe and gift shop that doesn't absolutely fleece you.

If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks nearby - Bradgate Park's only 4 miles away, or Green Acres if you want something more self-catering - the Space Centre makes a solid half-day trip when the weather's iffy. It's Leicester's best answer to a rainy afternoon, honestly. Leicester town centre is close enough for a spot of lunch or shopping before or after.
