About Nat Tor

The walk up Nat Tor rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb entirely worthwhile. It's a proper granite peak rising above Okehampton on Dartmoor, and from the top you get sweeping moorland stretching in every direction - moorland that actually looks wild and genuinely remote even though you're only an hour or so from Devon's coast.

Getting up there is straightforward enough for anyone with reasonable fitness. The path isn't technical, just steep in places, and the ground can be boggy depending on how recently it's rained. Allow a solid hour to climb; you could do it faster but there's no point rushing. The stone cairn at the summit is small but sits in a brilliant spot, and on a clear day you can pick out other tors dotted across the moor like old teeth.

This is one for walkers rather than families with very young children, though teenagers who don't mind a bit of grunt will find it satisfying. The views reward the effort, and there's something about standing on a granite peak surrounded by nothing but open moorland that makes you feel properly away from things. It's free, obviously - just rock and public footpath.

If you're staying at Lydford Caravan & Camping Park, Nat Tor makes a cracking half-day excursion, or pair it with Langstone Manor if you want to build a longer Dartmoor walking itinerary. The moorland around here doesn't get the crowds that Hay Tor does further south, which is very much in its favour.
