Narborough Railway Line

The old railway line that once connected King's Lynn to Narborough is long gone, but the corridor remains - a quiet, tree-lined walk that cuts through Norfolk countryside in a way modern roads simply don't manage. It's one of those places where you stumble upon Victorian engineering almost by accident: a bridge here, an embankment there, the ghost of something purposeful beneath the brambles.

What makes it work is the sheer flatness and peace. There's no dramatic peak or waterfall to justify the trip - this is about the walk itself, the rhythm of it, the way the landscape opens up as you move away from King's Lynn. Bird watchers tend to find their way here for the same reason. The line also serves walkers tackling longer Norfolk routes, particularly those connecting toward Breckland.

Families with young children might find it a bit samey after an hour or so. Keen walkers and anyone into industrial heritage will get considerably more from it. It's free, obviously - it's just land - and you can access it pretty much anytime, though winter mud can be ferocious.

If you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa or Breckland Meadows nearby, it's a decent half-day filler on a decent weather day. Don't expect facilities or signage. Bring a map and sensible shoes. It won't change your life, but it's proper Norfolk walking - honest, unmanicured, and all the better for it.
