Narberth Castle

The ruins of Narberth Castle rise from a grassy mound just outside the town itself, a stubborn Norman keep refusing to fade entirely from the Carmarthenshire landscape. What you're looking at is essentially a shell - the stone walls of a 12th-century fortress that once mattered rather more than it does now, commanding views over the river valley below. It's free to wander around, which is the main selling point, and the walk up takes five minutes if that.

History types will spend maybe twenty minutes picking over the remains and imagining what stood here. The views back towards Narberth town are decent but not breathtaking - you're never more than a short climb from anywhere in this part of Wales. Families with small children might find it a bit of a damp squib unless they're into climbing about on old stones. There's no visitor infrastructure, no café, nothing really except the castle itself and some interpretive boards if you're lucky.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - Noble Court and Redford Caravan are virtually on the doorstep - it's absolutely worth the leg stretch. Bluestone Resort, about twenty minutes away, could fit this in as part of a broader afternoon pottering about Narberth town centre, which has decent independent shops and a few pubs. But don't drive from further afield specially. It's the sort of stop you make because you're already in the area, not a destination in its own right.
