The walled garden in Nantwich is one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick snap for Instagram. Built originally to supply the big house with fruit and veg, it's now run as a museum where you can actually see how Victorian gardeners got things done - proper pruning techniques, heritage seed varieties, the lot. The walls themselves are the real draw. Built centuries ago to trap warmth and shelter tender plants, they create this almost Mediterranean microclimate that feels incongruous in Cheshire. You'll spot espalier fruit trees trained flat against the brick, and in season the soft fruit cages are heavy with raspberries and gooseberries.

Historically minded types will have the most fun here, particularly if you're interested in how working gardens functioned. It's not a flashy attraction - there's no gift shop theatre or fancy cafe - just straightforward horticulture and heritage on display. Allow a good hour minimum, longer if you're the sort who wants to chat with the volunteers (they usually are knowledgeable).

Nantwich itself is a proper medieval market town with enough half-timbered streets to fill an afternoon, so this slots nicely into a longer visit rather than being a destination on its own. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - The Willows Touring Park is barely a mile away, Little Ranch Glamping just two miles off - it's worth an hour of your time before heading into town for lunch. Check opening hours locally; they're seasonal and the place is best visited May through September when the gardens are actually productive.
