Nant-y-Moch Reservoir

Drive inland from Aberystwyth and the landscape shifts fast - rolling hills give way to proper moorland, and then you're there: Nant-y-Moch Reservoir stretching across a high valley like something from the Brecon Beacons, except quieter and far less crowded. It's a working water supply for mid-Wales, which means you won't find buzzing cafes or gift shops, but that's precisely why it's worth the trip.

The dam itself is a solid bit of 1960s engineering - nothing fancy, but the walk around the upper reaches offers genuine mountain-lake atmosphere. On a clear day the views open right across towards Snowdonia. Most visitors come for the walks rather than loitering by the water, and walkers will find proper trails rather than promenade nonsense. Allow two to three hours if you want to stretch your legs properly; an hour if you're just after photos and a breather.

Families with older kids will manage fine - the paths are reasonably clear - though it's steep enough to rule out prams. Younger children might find the walk a bit long for what is, frankly, a reservoir. History buffs won't find much here, but keen walkers and landscape photographers absolutely should make the detour from Aberystwyth.

It's free to visit and open year-round, though winter weather can roll in quickly at this altitude. Staying at one of the nearby campsites - Forester's Retreat or Aber Camping are closest - gives you a proper base for exploring the Ceredigion hills. Pack a packed lunch; there's nowhere to buy one here.
