Nancy's Wood

The woodland floor at Nancy's Wood is thick with moss and fallen leaves - the kind of place where your footsteps go properly quiet. It's a proper forest walk just outside Durham, the sort of spot locals know but visitors often miss entirely.

You're walking through mature woodland here, with good tree coverage overhead and enough space to move without feeling hemmed in. Historically inclined types will find the woodland itself interesting - it's been managed woodland for centuries around Durham. Walkers get the most from it, particularly if you're combining visits with nearby Witton Castle or the glamping options at Country Glamping and High Farm Holiday Park. This isn't a destination that demands hours of your time, but it's an excellent break from the car if you're basing yourself at one of the holiday parks in the area.
