Nairn Library

The library sits bang in the middle of Nairn, a handsome Victorian building that's far more interesting than the word 'library' might suggest. Inside you'll find the usual books and computers, yes, but the real draw is the local history collection - proper stuff about the Moray coast, old photographs, records of the fishing industry that built this town.

It's the kind of place you pop into on a wet afternoon, not a destination in itself. Families with kids will appreciate the children's section, and anyone researching Highland genealogy or local history could happily spend a couple of hours here. The staff know their stuff and aren't afraid to chat.

Free entry, as with most Scottish libraries. You'll likely spend 45 minutes to an hour unless you're doing serious research. Opening hours are standard library times - best to check ahead, mind you, as they do vary.

If you're camping at Barrow Campsite just down the road, this is a solid rainy-day option. Nairn itself is worth a wander - the High Street has decent shops and cafes, and the beach is only a stroll away. The library works well as part of a morning in town before heading to Findhorn or the Culbin Sands. Not essential, but genuinely useful.
