Mynydd Tyr Sais

The walk up Mynydd Tyr Sais from Llanbrynmair rewards you with proper 360-degree views across Mid Wales - moorland rolling on for miles, valley floors dropping away beneath you, and on clear days the sort of light that makes you understand why people relocate to this part of the world. It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical scramble, taking the best part of two hours round trip depending on your pace and the path conditions.

The moorland terrain is open and windswept - no shelter to speak of, so weather can change quickly. The views genuinely are worth it though. You're looking out over the Dovey Valley and surrounding peaks, with the Cambrian Mountains rolling away. Walkers will get the most from this, particularly those staying at Cringoed Caravan Park just down the road - it's the sort of walk you can do mid-week without crowds.

Families with older children might manage it fine; younger ones would find it a long slog for limited payoff since the summit itself is fairly bare. There's no facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat. The approach from Llanbrynmair is the sensible route - starts from a reasonable parking area near the village and heads straight up through access land.

It's free, obviously - it's a mountain. Go on a morning when the clouds haven't rolled in yet. The afternoon mist can swallow the views entirely.
