Mynydd Llyn Coch-hwyad

The walk up Mynydd Llyn Coch-hwyad rewards you with proper moorland views across Mid Wales, and it's the sort of peak that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks around Llanbrynmair. The climb itself is straightforward enough - steep in places, but nothing that'll have you gasping for breath if you're reasonably fit. Once you're up there, the landscape opens out: rolling hills, patches of rough grass, and on a clear day you can see for miles across Powys.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a bit of a slog. The views alone make it worth the effort - there's something about standing on a Welsh peak that just works, even if it's not particularly high. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

It sits well within a wider peak-bagging circuit if you're staying at Pandy Camping or Cringoed Caravan Park - both within five or six miles. The bonus is there's no entrance fee, no opening hours nonsense. You just turn up and walk. Best in decent weather, obviously. In rain or mist, the appeal drops considerably. Early morning is lovely if you can manage it - fewer people about and the light tends to be better for photographs.
