Mynydd Talyglannau

The walk up Mynydd Talyglannau starts gently enough from Llanbrynmair, but don't be fooled - this Powys peak will test your legs before rewarding you with proper moorland views. The climb isn't technically difficult, but it's relentless, and the wind up there can be vicious even on days that seem calm below.

Once you reach the summit, you're standing on a windswept plateau with views stretching across Mid Wales. On a clear day, the ridgeline sweeps away in both directions, and you can pick out other peaks in the distance. The ground underfoot is boggy in places - proper moorland - so good boots are essential, not optional.

This one's for walkers who actually want a walk, not a stroll. History buffs won't find much to grip them, and young children might struggle with the sustained climb. But if you're fit and after solitude rather than scenic honeypots, you'll find something genuine here. The landscape feels wild and less manicured than the better-known Welsh peaks.

Give yourself three to four hours for the round trip from Llanbrynmair, longer if you're taking your time. Free to access, obviously - it's open moorland.
