Mynydd Penygarreg

Sharp limestone crags and weathered rock faces mark this 555-metre peak just south of Llandudno, where the countryside opens up into proper Welsh hill country. I'd been driving past the turn-off for years before finally pulling over to tackle it properly. The climb isn't technically demanding but it's steep enough to get your heart pumping, with loose scree in places that'll have you watching your footing.

From the summit, the views stretch across Conwy Bay and the Great Orme, with Snowdonia's peaks visible on clear days. It's not the most dramatic mountain you'll encounter in North Wales, but there's something satisfying about having a decent hill walk so close to the coast. The round trip takes about two hours if you're reasonably fit.

Families with older children who enjoy a proper walk will find this rewarding, though it's not suitable for pushchairs or very young kids. Walkers staying at nearby parks like Dinarth Hall or Tan Y Bryn Glamping will appreciate having a decent peak within easy reach rather than driving deeper into Snowdonia. Weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even on sunny days. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photography, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself midweek.
