Mynydd Moel

The walk up Mynydd Moel from Dolgellau is straightforward enough, which means the summit gets busy on decent weekends - but there's good reason for that. At 863 metres, it's not Wales' most dramatic peak, yet the views south towards Cader Idris and west across the Mawddach estuary more than justify the effort. Allow a good two hours up and back from the town, maybe three if you're stopping for photographs or you've got kids in tow.

It's the kind of walk that suits walkers who want proper moorland without scrambling or exposure - families included, though legs need to be reasonably sturdy. The terrain is mostly grass and stone, nothing technical, though it can be boggy after rain and the path gets worn in places. Start early if the weather's decent because cloud rolls in fast here.

You won't find a cafe at the top or any facilities - bring water and whatever snacks you fancy. The walk is free, obviously, and starts right from Dolgellau itself, which keeps costs down for a holiday based at Torrent Walk Campsite or the brilliant Llwyn yr Helm just outside town. If you're camping in the area and have decent boots, Mynydd Moel makes a proper morning out without needing to drive anywhere. The descent is easier on the knees than the slog up, which is something.
