Mynydd Dol-Fanog

The walk up Mynydd Dol-Fanog rewards you with proper views across the Cader Idris massif and down towards Dolgellau. It's not a mountain that commands attention in the way its bigger neighbours do, but that's rather the point. You'll share the slopes with far fewer people, which makes for a peaceful few hours if you're based in the Dolgellau area.

The ascent is straightforward enough - nothing technical, just a steady climb through moorland with decent paths most of the way. In good visibility you can see for miles; on a grey day it's moody and atmospheric. Allow a couple of hours up and back, depending on fitness. It works well as a half-day outing if you're staying at Torrent Walk Campsite or Llwyn yr Helm Caravan and Camping Park, both close enough for a quick drive.

Best suited to walkers who've done similar terrain before rather than complete beginners, though there's nothing punishing about it. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the moorland repetitive. The views from the top make the effort worthwhile, especially on a clear morning when Dolgellau sits neat and small in the valley below.

Go early if you can. The mountain's quiet by nature, but midday weekends do bring the occasional group. Free to access, naturally - it's a Welsh hillside. No facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat.
