Mynydd Cwmeiddew

The walk up Mynydd Cwmeiddew from Dolgellau is a proper hill rather than a mountain, but that's exactly why it works. You get proper views across the Mawddach valley without needing rock-climbing gear or a dawn start. The route climbs steadily through woodland before opening onto moorland, where the whole valley spreads below you - Dolgellau tucked into the valley floor, those distinctive ridges of the Cader Idris range visible to the south. Takes about ninety minutes up from the town, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

This is one for walkers who want some exertion but not an all-day mission. The views make the climb worthwhile, though it's not the dramatic peak you might be imagining - more a grand vantage point than a summit with attitude. Weather matters here. Come on a clear day and you'll see why people bother. Come in mist and you'll spend two hours staring at damp rocks.

Free to walk, obviously. Dolgellau sits at the heart of Snowdonia, so you'll want to pair this with other walks in the area. If you're camping, Llwyn yr Helm is the obvious choice - it's closer to town and has excellent reviews. Torrent Walk Campsite works too if you want something smaller and less manicured. Either base would give you access to the better-known peaks plus this quieter route that punches above its weight for scenery.
