Mynydd Cribau

The walk up Mynydd Cribau is a proper knee-knocker - steep in places, but only about 45 minutes from the car park if you're moving at a decent pace. The summit sits at 611 metres and rewards you with views across the Conwy Valley that stretch all the way to the coast on a clear day. You'll see the Snowdonia peaks clustered to the south, which is where most people head, so this feels refreshingly quiet by comparison.

It's a straightforward fell walk rather than a technical scramble. The path is well-trodden and mostly obvious, though the boggy sections near the top can catch you out in wet weather - I'd recommend good boots rather than trainers. Allow two hours for the full round trip if you're stopping at the summit for a brew and a sit-down, which you absolutely should.

Walkers will get the most from this one, particularly those based around Betws-y-Coed who want something quick without the crowds that pile onto the big Snowdonia hikes. It's free, naturally - just park up and go. Families with confident hill-walkers aged eight-plus would manage it fine, though younger kids might find the climb tedious. The peak itself is just a cairn and some views rather than a building or visitor facility, so don't expect anything beyond the landscape.
