Mynydd Cil-cwm

The walk up Mynydd Cil-cwm is genuinely rewarding - a proper hill rather than a stroll, with views that open up the moment you gain height. It's the kind of peak that feels more substantial than its height suggests, rising from the valley near Llanbrynmair with enough grunt to make you work for it.

The summit itself isn't dramatic in the Instagram sense. No rocky scramble, no dramatic drop. What you get instead is space - wide open moorland stretching across Mid Wales, with the kind of visibility that rewards a clear day. On a bad one, frankly, it's a bit dull. The walk takes two to three hours there and back depending on your fitness and which route you take, and it's free, naturally, since it's just open moorland.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a family picnic spot - the terrain is boggy in places, exposed to weather, and there's nothing much to do once you reach the top besides admire the views and turn around. Kids will likely find it a slog without proper motivation. Spring and summer work best when the light's decent and the ground's drier.
