Mynydd Bwlchyrhaearn

The walk up Mynydd Bwlchyrhaearn rewards you with one of those rare views that actually justifies the climb. Starting from near Betws-y-Coed, you're looking at a moderately steep ascent through woodland that opens onto moorland - nothing technical, but it'll get your legs working.

What you get at the top is proper worth the effort. The summit sits at a decent height with views stretching across the Conwy Valley and into Snowdonia beyond. On a clear day - and you'll need one here, cloud does roll in quickly - you can make out multiple peaks and the green patchwork of the valleys below. The actual peak is unmarked, which somehow makes it feel more genuine than the well-trodden tourist routes.

This suits walkers who want something accessible but with a bit of grunt to it. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the moorland stretch a touch dull. You're looking at around two to three hours for a decent loop, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

The location makes it a natural fit with a Snowdonia park holiday. Maenan Abbey Caravan Park sits just 3.7 miles away and hits five stars, while Snowdonia Glamping and Erw Glas both offer excellent bases if you're after something with more character. None of these walks need booking - you're out on the mountains for free, which is how it should be. Start early though. The weather changes fast up here, and afternoon cloud can turn a cracking view into frustration.
