Myers Allotment, Butterfly Conservation Reserve

A working allotment that's been converted into a butterfly haven, Myers sits just outside Carnforth and attracts more than just green-fingered types. The site combines traditional vegetable plots with deliberately planted nectar flowers - milkwort, marjoram, teasels - all designed to feed butterflies rather than keep them out. You'll spot Peacocks and Red Admirals in summer, and if you're lucky, Common Blues flitting between the taller plants.

It's genuinely low-key. There's no café, no visitor centre, no queue at the gate. Just allotments and butterflies doing their thing. The reserve appeals most to nature watchers and amateur photographers - you'll want a decent camera or at least patience to catch decent shots. Peak season runs late June through September, when the butterfly activity justifies the visit. Families with restless kids might struggle beyond 45 minutes; it's not a playground.

Free access, as far as can be determined, though hours aren't widely published - best to check locally in Carnforth before you visit. Allow 90 minutes if you're serious about spotting species; half an hour if you're passing through.
