Mustard Hill

The walk up Mustard Hill, just outside Ambleside, is a proper little lung-burner - nothing fancy, just a steep grind through woodland that deposits you on a modest summit with views across the central Lake District. On a clear day you'll clock the Helvellyn range and can peer down towards Windermere. It's the kind of fell that locals do between breakfast and a late lunch, not the sort of place you're queuing behind coach parties.

There's no messing about with false summits or scrambles - you climb, you reach the top, you enjoy the panorama, then you're back at the car in under three hours if you're fit. The terrain is straightforward woodland path with bracken on the upper slopes, so it suits walkers who want a genuine hill experience without needing a guidebook or specialist kit.

Families with capable teenagers will manage it fine. Younger kids might find the unrelenting gradient tedious, if I'm honest. It's not a social climb - no cairn-builders or Instagram moments, which rather appeals.

From the caravan parks dotted around Ambleside - Hill of Oaks, Park Cliffe, Parkdean's Fallbarrow - Mustard Hill works as a half-day excursion that breaks up a Lake District holiday nicely. Base yourself at one of those parks and you're well-positioned to tackle it early, then spend the afternoon messing about on Windermere itself. Free to walk, naturally, and accessible year-round though it's muddy as hell in winter.
