Museum & Art Swindon

The Victorian building on Bath Road houses Swindon's main cultural offering, and it's worth carving out a couple of hours if you're staying at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky or anywhere nearby. Inside you'll find a solid collection of art spanning from the 18th century onwards, alongside rotating exhibitions that actually change often enough to warrant a repeat visit.

The permanent galleries cover local history and archaeology - Roman bits, Saxon finds, the sort of thing that makes sense once you realise Swindon sits on genuinely interesting ground. The art collection leans towards British painters, which beats the predictable continental rotation you get elsewhere. There's a decent Edwardian section that caught me off guard.

Walkers and history buffs will get proper value here. Children under ten might manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes if they're the type who reads the panels. It's not flashy or interactive in the modern sense, which is either refreshing or dull depending on your tolerance.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10.30 to 16.30, so plan accordingly - it's shut Sundays and Mondays. Admission is free, which removes any sting from the decision to drop in. The location near Botswicky means you can easily combine it with a morning walk or afternoon at the glamping site itself. Nothing life-changing, but a proper little museum that does its job without pretension.
