Murray’s Isles

Two small islands sitting in the middle of Loch Carlingwark, just outside Castle Douglas - that's Murray's Isles. You won't be swimming out there or anything, but they're properly worth a look if you're passing through the area. The islands themselves are nothing grand, but there's something about them that catches the eye, especially if the light's right across the water.

They work best as a quick stop rather than a destination in themselves. You're looking at twenty minutes to half an hour of pottering about, taking photos, maybe having a think about what those islands would've meant to folk centuries back. Kids might lose interest fast unless they're into spotting birds or skipping stones. History buffs might get a bit more from it - there's medieval stuff attached to them if you dig into the local stories, though you won't find much signage telling you about it.

The real appeal is how they fit into a Dumfries & Galloway park holiday. If you're based at Auchenlarie Holiday Park just two miles away, this is the kind of thing you pop to on a morning walk before breakfast. The loch itself is pleasant enough for a stroll, and Castle Douglas is right there for shops and a bite to eat. It's the sort of place that feels proper Scottish - quiet, a bit mysterious, no theme park nonsense. Not worth routing your whole trip around, but if you're in the area, don't skip it.
