Muncaster Castle

The drive up to Muncaster is properly dramatic - you're winding through the Esk Valley near Holmrook, suddenly this red sandstone castle materializes above the treeline. It's been standing since the 13th century, and the thing that strikes you first is how genuine it feels. Not a theme park version or some heavily restored museum piece, but an actual family home that's been lived in continuously.

Inside, you wander through rooms stuffed with furniture, paintings and quirky collections that feel less curated and more like someone's just left them there. The views from the upper floors across Lakeland are genuinely worth the climb. There's a maze and ornamental gardens outside if you need to burn off energy, though they're not going to keep you entertained for hours.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from a proper guided tour - the stories about feuds, visits from Henry VIII and odd family traditions add real flavour. Kids under ten will enjoy the maze and exploring the towers, but it's not a full day out on its own. Thirty-year-olds without a particular interest in medieval architecture might find an hour enough.

If you're camping at Fisherground Campsite - just a few miles away - it's a decent option for a morning or afternoon visit. Not a must-do, but if you're exploring this corner of Cumbria, it slots in well enough. The village of Holmrook nearby is genuinely tiny, so plan accordingly for supplies or meals.
