Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Mourne Mountains rise abruptly from the coastal plain south of Newcastle like something from a fantasy novel - all granite peaks and wild moorland that catch the light differently every hour. This isn't a single attraction with a visitor centre and gift shop. It's 150 square kilometres of proper mountain country that demands you get out and walk it.

What you get here depends entirely on your energy levels. Day-trippers from Newcastle tend to tackle the Mourne Wall, a drystone boundary that snakes across thirteen peaks - doable in stages, absolutely knackering if you do it all at once. The panoramas across County Down and towards the Irish Sea reward the effort. Serious walkers treat it as their winter training ground. Families with younger kids do better on the lower trails around Tollymore Forest Park or the Shimna River, where you won't be gasping for breath within twenty minutes.

There's no charge to access the mountains themselves - they're open access land. Time your visit for autumn or early spring when the light's proper golden and the midges aren't a nightmare. Summer weekends pull crowds from Belfast, so go midweek if you can.

The handful of glamping and caravan sites dotted around - Tollymore Campsite and Greenview Glamping sit closest - make this an excellent base for a longer stay. You're ideally placed for days exploring both the mountains and the coast at Dundrum Bay. It's not somewhere you'll find manicured paths or interpretation boards. Come prepared with a map, decent boots, and realistic expectations about the weather.
