Mountherrick Hill

The walk up Mountherrick Hill from Biggar takes the better part of an afternoon, but you're rewarded with proper views across the Lowlands that justify the effort. It's not a mountain in the dramatic sense - more of a substantial hill that climbs gradually through farmland before opening up near the summit. On a clear day you can see for miles in every direction, which is exactly what you want when you've earned it.

This is walker territory, full stop. The ascent isn't technically difficult but it does go on, so bring water and wear decent boots. Young kids might manage it if they're keen, but there's no café at the top and no shortcuts, so it's not ideal for a quick family outing. History buffs will appreciate that you're walking through proper Lowland terrain - the sort of landscape that's been worked and lived in for centuries.

Biggar itself is a small working town with a few decent pubs for post-walk recovery, which matters more than you'd think after three hours uphill. If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park - just 4.5 miles away and genuinely well-reviewed - this is an excellent half-day excursion. Leave early to catch decent light and get down before dusk rolls in. The path can be muddy and visibility drops fast once the sun starts setting in these parts.
