Mound 7

Ancient earthworks don't come much more mysterious than this grassy hump rising from Suffolk farmland. Part of the Sutton Hoo complex but standing apart from the main burial ground, Mound 7 represents one of the lesser-known Anglo-Saxon burial sites that dot this historically rich landscape east of Woodbridge.

What you'll find is essentially a large grass-covered mound - no dramatic excavations or treasure displays here. The appeal lies in the site's brooding atmosphere and what it represents rather than anything you can actually see. Walking around its perimeter takes all of ten minutes, though the views across the Deben valley are rather lovely on a clear day.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the connection to the wider Sutton Hoo story, but families with young children might find it underwhelming after the excitement of the main visitor centre. It's the sort of place that rewards those who enjoy contemplating the past while standing where kings once lay buried.

The site works well as a quiet addition to a holiday based at nearby parks like Woodbridge Glamping or Moon & Sixpence Holiday Park. Combine it with the main Sutton Hoo attraction for a proper archaeological day out, though don't expect to spend more than half an hour here unless you're particularly taken with ancient burial practices.
