Mound 6

Ancient burial mounds don't get much more mysterious than this one. Part of the Sutton Hoo complex but standing apart from the main site, Mound 6 is one of those archaeological puzzles that keeps specialists scratching their heads. What's left is essentially a grassy hump in the landscape, but this unremarkable-looking rise once covered a 7th-century burial chamber that archaeologists partially excavated in the 1980s.

Unlike its famous neighbour that yielded the Anglo-Saxon treasures, this mound gave up fewer secrets. The burial had been disturbed centuries ago, leaving behind tantalising fragments rather than spectacular finds. History buffs will appreciate the significance, but casual visitors might find it underwhelming - there's no interpretation board and precious little to see beyond the earthwork itself.

Walkers exploring the wider Sutton Hoo area will stumble across it easily enough, and it's free to wander around. Allow about ten minutes unless you're the sort who likes to contemplate the passage of time while standing on ancient ground.

From holiday parks around Woodbridge like Moon & Sixpence or Suffolk Yurt Holidays, it's a short drive to combine with the main Sutton Hoo site. Frankly, most people will get more from the visitor centre and main burial ground, but archaeological completists will want to tick this one off their list.
