Mound 15

Standing in what looks like an unremarkable field near Woodbridge, you might easily walk past this grassy hump without a second thought. That would be a mistake. Mound 15 is one of the lesser-known burial mounds from the famous Sutton Hoo complex, where Anglo-Saxon kings were laid to rest with their treasure-laden ships over 1,400 years ago.

Unlike the main Sutton Hoo visitor centre with its crowds and audio guides, this mound sits quietly in the landscape, giving you space to contemplate what lies beneath. The earthwork itself isn't much to photograph - it's essentially a raised bump in the ground - but archaeology enthusiasts and anyone with an imagination will find it properly atmospheric.

Children might need some storytelling to get excited about what appears to be just a hill, but adults who appreciate the weight of history will understand the significance. This is where real Anglo-Saxon nobility once rested, part of the same cemetery complex that yielded some of Britain's greatest archaeological treasures.

Access appears to be free, though check locally about any restrictions. It's a quick stop rather than a day out - twenty minutes will do unless you're the type to sit and ponder for ages.
