Mound 13

Standing in a field just outside Woodbridge, this Bronze Age burial mound looks remarkably ordinary for something that's roughly 3,500 years old. Part of the Sutton Hoo archaeological landscape, Mound 13 is one of the smaller burial sites that dot this corner of Suffolk, though it lacks the fame of its more celebrated neighbours.

Unlike the reconstructed burial chamber at the main Sutton Hoo site, this is archaeology in the raw - a grass-covered bump that requires a fair bit of imagination to appreciate. The mound was excavated in the 1960s and found to contain cremated remains and bronze objects, but there's precious little to see beyond the earthwork itself.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the context, especially if they've already visited the main Sutton Hoo exhibition. For everyone else, it's probably one to skip unless you're particularly keen on Bronze Age burial practices. The site appears to be freely accessible as it's in open countryside, though there's no interpretation or facilities.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Woodbridge Glamping or Moon & Sixpence, it makes for a brief detour rather than a destination. Combine it with the more substantial Sutton Hoo site for a proper archaeological day out, but don't expect to linger here long.
