Mound

The Mound rises abruptly from the Devon coastline just south of Ilfracombe, a stubby headland that commands views across the Bristol Channel. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just wandering round a manicured path. Seabirds nest here, and if you time it right (spring and early summer are best), you'll see guillemots and razorbills clustered on the rocky faces. The walk itself takes about 45 minutes there and back, depending on how long you linger staring out to sea. It's not arduous, but the coastal path can get blustery without warning, so dress for it.

This is strictly for walkers and birdwatchers. Families with toddlers might find it a bit much, though older kids interested in wildlife will get something real out of it - no gift shop nonsense, just nature doing its thing. The reserve is free to access, which is refreshing.

What makes it work for a park-based holiday at Stowford Farm Meadows (5.8 miles away) is that it fills an hour or two without feeling like tourist-trap filler. Ilfracombe itself is close enough for fish and chips afterwards, and the reserve slots neatly between beach time and heading inland. The views from the top justify the climb, though bring binoculars if you're serious about the birds. Low tide reveals more of the rocky outcrops, so check the tides before you go.
