Manning’s Pit

Manning's Pit is a disused quarry near Ilfracombe that's become something of a local curiosity rather than a major draw. It's basically a deep excavation in the landscape with steep rocky sides - the sort of place that makes you wonder what Victorian industrialists were doing hacking chunks out of the earth. The pit itself is an honest bit of industrial archaeology: you can see the layers of rock and get a sense of the sheer graft involved in extracting stone by hand and basic machinery.

It's more of a quick detour than a destination in itself. Walkers tackling routes around Ilfracombe might swing by, and geology enthusiasts will find it genuinely interesting for what it reveals about Devon's quarrying past. Kids might be momentarily intrigued by the depth and the slightly precarious feel of standing above it, though they'll lose interest fast if you're not planning to scramble about.

Getting specific details about opening times or admission is tricky - it appears to be freely accessible, but there's minimal signposting or infrastructure. Allow fifteen minutes to look around properly, maybe half an hour if you're photographing it or studying the rock formations.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Stowford Farm Meadows or Hidden Valley are both within five miles - Manning's Pit works as a brief leg-stretcher between beach days or longer countryside walks. It's authentic enough, but frankly the clifftop paths around Ilfracombe itself are far more rewarding.
