Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail winds for 180 miles across North Devon, following the route of Tarka the otter through Henry Williamson's beloved novel. Most people tackle it in sections rather than the whole loop - sensible, given the distance. From Ilfracombe, you can pick up stretches that take in the Taw and Torridge estuaries, riverside paths that are genuinely lovely in spring when the banks are thick with wildflowers.

It's primarily a walking and cycling route, though the path quality varies. Some bits are proper tarmac, others are rougher country trails. You'll see otters if you're incredibly lucky and very quiet, but realistically you're getting riverside scenery, woodland sections, and views across farmland. The whole thing works brilliantly for families with older kids or keen walkers - younger children might find the length tedious unless you're breaking it into short bursts.

Half a day is enough for a decent walk from Ilfracombe along the quieter stretches. There's free access throughout. Weather matters here; autumn and spring offer the best conditions before winter rains make the trail muddy and unpredictable.

If you're camping at Hidden Valley Touring and Camping Park or Stowford Farm Meadows Holiday Park nearby, the trail gives you purpose beyond the campsite. It's not dramatic scenery like you'd find on the coast path, but it's the kind of walk that rewards you slowly - peaceful, manageable, and proper English countryside.
