Mote of Urr

Stone foundations and earthwork banks sprawl across a hilltop field near Dalbeattie, marking what was once Scotland's largest motte-and-bailey castle. The Mote of Urr dates back to the 12th century, when it served as the stronghold of the powerful de Berkeley lords who controlled this stretch of Dumfries & Galloway.

Walking around the site today requires a fair bit of imagination. The wooden keep and buildings vanished centuries ago, leaving only the impressive earthen mound - the 'motte' - and the surrounding defensive ditches. But the scale becomes clear once you're here: this was a serious fortress, not some minor border post.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the information boards that help piece together the site's story, though families with young children might find it less engaging than more dramatic castle ruins. The walk from the car park is short and manageable, making it an easy addition to a day exploring the area around Dalbeattie.

Entry appears to be free, though facilities are basic. Allow about 30 minutes unless you're particularly keen on medieval fortifications. It's well worth combining with a visit to nearby Dalbeattie Forest for a proper day out. Several holiday parks dot the surrounding countryside, including Glenearly Caravan Park and Mollance Farm, making this corner of Dumfries & Galloway a decent base for exploring both coast and countryside.
