Barclosh Hill

From the top of this modest Lowlands peak, the Solway Firth stretches out like hammered silver on a clear day, with the Lake District fells just visible across the water. Barclosh Hill won't trouble serious hikers - it's more of a good leg-stretch than a proper climb - but the views from its heather-covered summit are surprisingly rewarding.

Walkers based around Dalbeattie will find this an excellent warm-up hill or evening jaunt. The approach is straightforward enough for confident children, though the boggy patches after rain can be a bit of a slog. Allow two hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady.

What makes this hill special is the 360-degree panorama at the top. On one side, the granite country around Criffel dominates the horizon. Turn around and you'll spot the distinctive outline of Screel Hill to the east. It's proper countryside up here - no crowds, just sheep and the occasional buzzard circling overhead.

Families staying at nearby Sandyhills Bay Holiday Park or Coastal Kippford will find this makes a nice contrast to beach days. The hill sits conveniently between several caravan parks, including Glenearly just 1.5 miles away, making it an easy addition to a Galloway holiday. Pack a thermos - the summit's an ideal spot for a brew with a view.
