Mote of Troqueer

An earthen mound rising abruptly from the landscape near Dumfries, the Mote of Troqueer is what remains of a Norman defensive stronghold built in the 12th century. It's not dramatic - there's no castle ruin to clamber over, no visitor centre with audiovisual displays. What you get is a grassy hump, roughly 40 feet high, with steep sides that still command the surrounding terrain after 900 years.

The appeal here is historical rather than visual. The location itself tells you something - positioned to monitor movement along what was once a crucial frontier zone. The mound sits just outside Dumfries town centre, making it an easy add-on if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Newbridge Country Park and Marthrown of Mabie are both within three miles and offer a decent base for exploring the area's quieter archaeological sites. Combine it with a walk along the Nith or a visit to nearby Sweetheart Abbey if you want to make a proper afternoon of it.
