Mosscastle Hill

The walk up Mosscastle Hill rewards you with proper views across the Lowlands - rolling farmland stretching toward the Southern Uplands, and on a clear day you can pick out the Clyde Valley sprawling below. It's not a dramatic peak, more of a steady climb through moorland and rough grass, but that's precisely why it works so well as a family outing from Biggar.

The summit sits at around 400 metres, which means you're high enough to feel like you've achieved something without needing scrambling skills or specialist kit. Allow an hour up, maybe 40 minutes back if your legs are decent. The paths can be boggy in places - proper waterproof boots matter here - but they're well-established enough that you won't get lost.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just outside Biggar, this makes an excellent half-day walk when the weather's cooperating. It's the sort of thing that keeps kids entertained because they can actually see progress as the landscape shrinks beneath them, and there's usually nothing too technical to frustrate them. Older walkers and local hikers tend to use it as a leg-stretcher rather than a destination in itself, which says something about its value - useful rather than spectacular.

The approach from Biggar is straightforward, but check conditions beforehand. Early morning in autumn can be glorious here, golden light across the moorland and far fewer people about. Worth the detour if you're in the area, though don't expect drama.
