Morfa Madryn

The shingle beach at Morfa Madryn stretches out grey and vast, backed by low dunes and marram grass that whispers in the wind. It's a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction - you won't find a car park or a gift shop, just a genuine bit of North Wales coastline that hasn't been smoothed over for tourism.

What makes it worth the trip from Llanfairfechan is the wildlife. Terns breed here in summer, and you'll spot oystercatchers and ringed plovers if you keep your eyes peeled. The shingle itself is botanically interesting - sea pea and other specialized plants cling to life in this harsh environment. It's the kind of place that appeals to serious birdwatchers and nature photographers rather than families after a seaside day out.

Accessibility is straightforward enough, though there are no facilities to speak of. Come at low tide if you want to walk the full width of the beach. Summer mornings are best for birdwatching; winter brings different species and far fewer visitors.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Kingsbridge, Plas Yn Llangoed, or Wonderfully Wild - this makes a good half-day outing when the weather cooperates. It's quiet, unglamorous, and genuinely wild. Not for everyone, but if you're the type who gets excited about spotting terns and uncommon coastal plants, you'll find plenty to occupy a couple of hours here.
