Mordenden Wood

You'll find yourself walking into proper woodland the moment you enter Mordenden Wood - the kind of place where the path narrows and the canopy closes in enough that you forget you're only a few miles from Maidstone. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured park, with good tracks running through mixed woodland that shift between dense sections and lighter glades depending on the season.

The wood itself is straightforward: a few kilometres of walking trails through beech, oak and birch, with enough variation to keep things interesting without being strenuous. Families with children will find it manageable - the paths are reasonably well-maintained and there's nowhere particularly treacherous to lose a toddler. That said, it's not a destination with attractions in it; you're coming here to walk, breathe in the smell of leaf litter, maybe spot some wildlife if you're lucky. Bring a packed lunch rather than expect facilities.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those after something low-key between two other activities. It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at Chegworth Mill Glamping or Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - close enough for a couple of hours without eating into the rest of your day. The woodland is free to access and open year-round, though autumn and spring are the times to visit if you want decent visibility and dry ground.

It's not dramatic or famous, but that's rather the point. Sometimes you just need a proper walk in the woods.
