Moorfields

The Somerset Levels around Taunton can feel a bit bleak in winter, but Moorfields nature reserve offers proper compensation. It's a working wetland that actually feels alive - you'll spot lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, water rails picking through the reed beds. The paths are flat and easy, which means it's genuinely accessible rather than just claiming to be.

What makes it worth the trip is the sense of stillness. There's no gift shop, no cafe, no interpretive boards telling you what you should feel. Just water, birds, and the occasional fisherman. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, though you could happily stretch it to two if the light's decent and the wildlife's cooperating.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider Levels exploration. You're less than two miles from Cornish Farm Touring Park and Ashe Farm Caravan and Camping Site, making it an easy morning or late-afternoon outing from your base. The terrain is completely flat - no hill legs required - so it suits families with younger children and anyone who finds the Quantocks a bit steep.

Go in spring or autumn for the best birdwatching. Summer can be mosquito-heavy, and winter's unpredictable on whether the water levels make the paths passable. Bring binoculars and wellies, and don't expect crowds. The reserve feels genuinely quiet, which is either exactly what you're after or a sign you should head somewhere busier.
