Moon Pond

Moon Pond sits just outside Ripon, a small lake that punches above its weight for a quick afternoon detour. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no crowds, no gift shops, just water, reeds, and the occasional heron if you're lucky enough. The walk round takes maybe twenty minutes at a leisurely pace, though plenty of people just park up and watch from the bank with a flask.

It works well for families with younger kids who need a break from driving, or anyone who fancies a proper stretch of the legs without committing to a full moorland hike. Birdwatchers will want binoculars; the pond attracts various waterfowl depending on season. Summer's pleasant but can draw a few more visitors. Winter's quieter and quite atmospheric, honestly.

Free to visit, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Allow an hour if you're walking the perimeter, half that if you're just stopping by. The nearest holiday parks - Woodhouse Farm and Riverside Meadows are both within three miles - make it a sensible pit stop on a park break in the area. Sleningford Watermill is further afield but worth knowing about if you're after something with a bit more going on. Moon Pond itself won't occupy your whole day, but as part of a wider Ripon exploration it's time well spent.
