Monnow Bridge

The only fortified bridge still standing in Britain - that's what makes Monnow Bridge worth the short detour from Coleford. Built in the 13th century to guard the crossing into Wales, it's a proper medieval survivor, with a squat stone tower plonked right in the middle of the span. You can walk across it (cars still do, mind you) and actually feel the weight of history underfoot - the arches are original, the stonework weathered but intact.

It's absolutely free and takes five minutes to cross, though you'll want longer if you're interested in Welsh border fortifications. The bridge itself is the whole experience - there's no visitor centre or gift shop, just the structure doing what it's done for eight centuries. Photographers will love it, particularly in golden hour when the Monnow River catches the light nicely beneath the arches.

History enthusiasts will find it genuinely significant; casual tourists might spend ten minutes max before moving on. The surrounding area is pleasant enough - green banks, decent walking potential along the river - but the bridge is the draw. Families with younger kids might find it a bit "so what?" unless you build it into a broader Forest of Dean adventure.

If you're camping at Bracelands or Doward Park, both barely three miles away, it's a worthwhile morning's outing. Pair it with a walk along the Wye Valley or a visit to nearby attractions in Coleford itself. Access is straightforward - no special arrangements needed, just turn up.
