Monkfish

The Monkfish gallery sits in Beverley, a market town that feels properly caught in time. It's a contemporary art space - smaller than you'd expect, but that's rather the point. The work on display tends toward the experimental side: photography, installation pieces, and the odd bit of sculpture that makes you squint and think for a minute.

This is a gallery for people who actually like looking at art without the pretension. No gift shop theatre, no twee café charging fiver for a cappuccino. You'll spend forty minutes here if you're thorough, twenty if you're after a quick look. The space itself is unpretentious - white walls, decent lighting, room to breathe.

It works well if you're based at Manor Farm Camping nearby and fancy a proper wander around Beverley proper. The town's got enough charm to occupy a morning - the Minster is exceptional, and there's decent shops and pubs dotted about. Monkfish fits naturally into that mix rather than being a destination in itself.

Bring the kids only if they're genuinely interested in contemporary work. This won't entertain younger ones for long. Much better for couples or solo travellers who've got an afternoon to kill and don't mind supporting the local arts scene. Free admission is standard for independent galleries like this, though do check ahead as things change.
