Moel y Golfa

The walk up Moel y Golfa takes about forty minutes from the car park, and you'll know exactly why locals call it the "Shropshire Matterhorn" the moment you see it. This stubby, cone-shaped peak rises 1,540 feet out of the Powys borderland near Welshpool, and it's steep enough to earn proper respect without being technical. The view from the top sweeps across Mid Wales in all directions - on a clear day you're looking at the Berwyn mountains one way and the Long Mynd the other. It's free to visit, of course, and the track is well-maintained most of the way, though it does get boggy after rain.

Who's it for? Walkers, primarily. Not a stroll for toddlers, but absolutely manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness who doesn't mind a bit of gradient. Families with children aged eight upwards will get something out of the effort. On a misty day you'll be underwhelmed - the view is really the whole point here. Go mid-week if you can; weekends bring a fair crowd, especially from Welshpool.

If you're staying at Bank Farm Caravan Park, you're less than half a mile away - practically on the doorstep. Even from Grantley Court or Seven Oaks (both three miles out), it's a natural morning mission. Pair it with a wander around Welshpool itself afterwards, or tackle the Brecon Beacons on another day. The peak rewards you for the huff and puff with genuine 360-degree landscape.
