Rodney's Pillar

An 18th-century sandstone column standing on high ground just outside Welshpool, Rodney's Pillar commemorates Admiral Lord Rodney's naval victories during the American War of Independence. It's not a flashy attraction - you won't find gift shops or interpretation boards - but that's rather the point. The pillar itself is a proper feat of engineering for its time, and the views across Powys from its elevated position are genuinely worth the walk up.

You can get close enough to read the inscriptions detailing Rodney's achievements at sea, though climbing it isn't permitted these days. The surrounding countryside is lovely, rolling farmland that feels properly remote despite being minutes from Welshpool town. Most visitors spend 20 to 30 minutes here, taking photos and soaking up the views before heading back down.

This works best for history enthusiasts rather than families with young children - there's no playground appeal, and the walk can be steep depending on which approach you take. If you're staying at Bank Farm Caravan Park or Grantley Court, both within a couple of miles, it's an easy afternoon detour. Combine it with a walk through the wider area, or pop into Welshpool itself to grab lunch and browse the market town's independent shops. Clear days are essential here; mist rolls in quickly and the views disappear entirely. Admission appears free, though you'll want sturdy footwear and shouldn't attempt it in wet conditions when the approach gets slippery.
